‘Red Sparrow’ Is Deadly And Seductive In First Trailer

20th Century Fox

Looks do kill. It’s not just a catchy tagline for a now off air TV show (Nikita). It perfectly sums up this new film. Interestingly, or unsurprisingly, they’re both about spies. In so many ways, I guess it doesn’t matter whether the story is original or an adaptation, when it comes to a story with a spy at the center (i.e., Alias), it’s always going to be interesting and worth keeping tabs on. Good and fun are matters for later, because right now, I’m completely intrigued.

‘The Nanny Diaries’ Is Still Charming And Cute 10 Years Later

The Weinstein Company

Who doesn’t love a good book adaptation? That answer is obvious. While it can pretty much always be agreed upon, that when it comes to adaptations of our favorite books or more obscure ones, audiences want something that looks like what they spent hours reading. However, that’s not always possible. Sometimes it’s just too complicated to get it all in or to simply get it right. Sometimes, there’s too many expectations and comparisons to other adaptations. And sometimes, it could very well be the people in charge of bringing the book to the big screen, who ultimately doom the finished film.

‘George Wallace’ Still Offers Up A Fascinating Portrait Of A Polarizing Political Figure 20 Years Later

TNT

When it comes to biographical movies it’s never predictable what you’ll get. What might look interesting and engaging in a trailer or TV spot, might be less than that when seen as a whole. There’s also the general fact that with biopics it’s tough to balance the need and/or desire for a factual portrayal, and the drama that must come from telling an interesting narrative. Some can manage all this pretty well, and others can’t weather the storm that comes from taking too much creative license.

‘Body Snatchers’ Is The Worst Remake Of The Bunch

Warner Bros.

Note: This piece was originally published on Creators.co.

Remakes. I hate remakes because they end up like this film. Dreadful, uninteresting, not scary in the slightest, and so many other things I’m not thinking of at the moment. I truly thought it would be a good idea to revisit this particular remake, but I was wrong. Live and learn, and sometimes regret.

‘The Invasion’ Is Still Fun 10 Years Later, Even If It’s Not Fully Effective

Warner Bros.

Note: This piece was originally published on Creators.co.

When it comes to remakes there’s always a certain expectation level. They’re notoriously, especially in the past 10 to 15 years, terrible ideas. Mere cash grabs that serve no other purpose, no matter how fun they may or may not be for audience members. But when it comes to a remake of a story that’s been done numerous times before, particularly with good results on occasion, it’s even harder. How do you take an incredibly well known story and do something new with it? Changing characters and locations only gets you so far. There needs to be more or it’ll crash and burn, and be yet another wasted effort that only looks like a quick cash grab for the studio.

‘Molly’s Game’ Looks Like a Game Worth Playing In First Trailer

STX Entertainment

“Do you know about me?”

That’s what Jessica Chastain asks Idris Elba in this first trailer, and while many will probably say, “No”, I can see that being an answer that won’t be true much longer. How do you inform the widest possible audience about a particular event or person who did something monumental, even if it was illegal? You make a movie. More often than not, more people will always respond to something if it’s put before them as a film.

‘Molly’s Game’ Looks Exciting And Sleek In Teaser For First Trailer

STX Entertainment

Note: This piece was originally published on Creators.co.

Is it too much to ask for just a simple teaser trailer? I mean, the same objective can be achieved, but it’ll certainly be less irritating than this. I thought this year was done with the teaser for the trailer crap, which I still blame on Ridley Scott, but apparently I was wrong. Fortunately, which I doubt I’ll ever say again, this is one time I’m okay with it. I’m that thrilled to finally be getting some footage!
