Another First Glance: “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part I”

After waiting over a month for something more, the world was finally treated today to the first full length trailer for the start of the end of a franchise!

That’s right ladies and gentlemen, everyone now has even more reason to be excited for the Lionsgate film “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part I”! And from the looks of things, we won’t be disappointed.

This action film stars Jennifer Lawrence (“X-Men: Days of Future Past”, “American Hustle”), Josh Hutcherson (upcoming “Escobar: Paradise Lost”, “Epic”), Liam Hemsworth (“Paranoia”, “Love and Honor”), Woody Harrelson (“True Detective”, “Out of the Furnace”), Elizabeth Banks (upcoming “Love & Mercy”, “Walk of Shame”), Julianne Moore (upcoming “Maps to the Stars” “The English Teacher”), Philip Seymour Hoffman (“A Most Wanted Man”, “God’s Pocket”), Sam Claflin (upcoming “The Riot Club”, “The Quiet Ones”), Jenna Malone (“10 Cent Pistol”, “The Wait”), Natalie Dormer (upcoming “The Riot Club”, “Game of Thrones”), Jeffrey Wright (“Boardwalk Empire”, “Only Lovers Left Alive”), Stanley Tucci (“BoJack Horseman”, “Transformers: Age of Extinction”), and Donald Sutherland (“The Calling”, “Crossing Lines”).

The film is directed by Francis Lawrence (“The Hunger Games: Catching Fire”, “Water for Elephants”) and written by Peter Craig (“The Town”) and Danny Strong (“Lee Daniels’ The Butler”, “Game Change”). It is based on the novel of the same name by Suzanne Collins.

The film is expected to hit theaters on Nov. 21, 2014.

Just on sheer size alone, this film is huge! That’s what’s mostly given in this first trailer, which still only seems like a teaser trailer. Although, strangely enough, it makes me actually think that splitting this particular book in two may actually be a good idea.

There are plenty of new scenes shown, which is great, and shows just how, Lawrence’s character will mainly react and adjust to this new situation. It also goes to show, and for me, has me even more excited, that this is an entirely different film than the last two. The previous entries had a certain predictability within them, and that’s just not present here. Unless, of course, you’ve read the books. But, even so, this new world, is even more intense than before. The action is so much bigger too, which is in line with this waging a war storyline that drives the entire film.

While Lawrence, of course, is the focal point still, it’s a little disappointing at times. Sure we get to see that the biggest improvement, other than scope of the film, is Hemsworth’s Gale. He’s definitely come a long way and it shows. He finally has a lot more to do and make it worth the fact that he’s in the film series at all. I’m just sad, that even though this trailer featured a lot of the new characters, again, they still weren’t expanded on. Is that part of this films mystery? I feel like the trailer’s taunting us by saying, “I know you’re excited about the characters, but I’m not going to let you see who they really are.” So unfair.

Regardless, for a first lengthier trailer, this is quite exciting! I’ll hold out for something better, and interviews, but this wasn’t bad. It really packs a punch and is well worth the little over two months wait!
